HMS Band & Chorus compete in the Music in the Parks Competition

On Friday, May 9, 2014 the Holland Middle School Band and Chorus students traveled to Orange County to compete in the Music in the Parks competition held at Placentia Presbyterian Church. The competition is open to all music performing groups from elementary through high school levels. At the competition on May 9, schools from throughout California as well as out of state brought their concert bands, orchestras, jazz bands, and chorus’ to perform for a panel of judges who provide constructive criticism as well as a ranking.

Following the morning competition, the students enjoy the day at Disneyland and California Adventure. In the evening, a special awards ceremony takes place inside Disneyland and includes performances from Mickey, Minnie, and other Disney performers.  Each category of musical group learns their ranking and receives a trophy reflecting their ranking against the other schools in their category. The Holland Band received 2nd place and the Holland Chorus received 1st place. During the awards ceremony, there are other awards given such as Overall Band, Overall Orchestra, Top Soloist, and Student Accompanist.  The final award that is presented is the coveted Esprit de Corps award which acknowledges the school with the best spirit and sportsmanship from throughout the day. The volunteers at the festival as well as the judges inform the festival host as to what they saw throughout the day and at that point the decision is made. This year, the Holland groups were awarded this coveted award!

Although the end of the school year is nearing, the Holland Band will be performing Friday, May 16 at the St. John the Baptist Fiesta in Baldwin Park at 6pm. The students and their director, Becky Othmer are excited to showcase one of the many performing arts classes at Holland Middle School in order to raise awareness to the value of music education in schools.
